EN ISO 14116:2015 – Protective clothing – Protection against flame – Limited flame spread materials, material assemblies and clothing

Protects the wearer in case of accidental contact with heat and flames. Should be used in combination with garments certified in accordance with EN ISO 11612.The standard is relevant for industrial workers and electricians.

Design requirements

When the protective clothing consists of two garments, the jacket must overlap the trousers by at least 20 cm when the user tries to touch their toes. (45 cm when the user is standing upright). The trousers must not be folded up.

Textile requirements

Flame and heat resistance requirements are determined according to three index levels, with Index 3 being the highest level.

Index 1

• Top or side edge must not ignite during testing.
• No sample shall produce burning residues.
• Afterglow must not spread after the flame ceases.

Index 2

Same as for Index 1, and in addition:

• No test must produce holes during testing

Index 3

Same as for Index 2, and in addition:

• After-burn must not exceed 2 seconds.

Materials or garments that are only approved according to Index 1 must not come into contact with the skin during use. If protective garments are Index 1, they must be used over garments that are certified at Index 2, Index 3 or above EN ISO 11612.

USER INFORMATION

To provide full protection, garments that cover the entire body, such as jacket and trousers or coveralls of flame retardant fabrics approved in accordance with EN ISO 11612 must be used. The garment is not designed to protect against conductive heat, radiant heat, molten metal and similar hazards.
